We bet you can’t imagine one without the other.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson character

Back when I was younger and obsessed with cartoons, I couldn’t imagine a more iconic duo in the world than Tom and Jerry. Even though they kept fighting (and trying to kill each other), there was something magnetic about the pair, so that you could never imagine one without the other. We need not even stray far from home to find famous fictional duos, take for instance our very own Jai and Veeru.

What’s interesting about these pairs is that they might not be the best of friends, on screen, all the time, yet they are always pictured together in popular imagination.

This got us thinking about other such duos and we’ve compiled a list of some of the most famed fictional duos in pop culture.

1. Batman and Robin

Batman and Robin

We had to begin the list with Gotham’s dark knight and his sidekick. There can’t be anyone in the world who doesn’t like the caped crusader, and there is an equally high number of followers of Robin. While Bruce Wayne is the only Batman in most timelines of DC, but there have been many Robins over the years, with one particular gut-wrenching storyline that featured Robin’s death. However, the iconic duo of Batman-Robin has remained imprinted in the minds of many generations.

2. Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry

Particularly popular with 90s kids, this cat and mouse ‘frenemy’ pair is arguably the most popular cartoon pair. Tom and Jerry is also one of the longest-running cartoon series of all time, and was a pioneer in the field of slapstick comedy. What’s more? Tom and Jerry have even won 7 Academy Awards throughout its run, not many can boast this claim.

3. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson

Arthur Conan Doyle created an international sensation with his construction of detective Sherlock Holmes, and the prototype of this detective has inspired the creation of many more sleuths in its stead. A pivotal point in Conan Doyle’s detective stories is the relationship between his supremely intelligent protagonist Sherlock and Sherlock’s partner cum friend, Dr. John Watson. No two people can be more different from each other, than Sherlock and Watson. While Sherlock is emotionally cold and calculative, to the point of being an actual robot, Watson brings the required humane warmth to Sherlock’s stories.

4. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy

Another one from the cartoon archives, this pair is slightly different from the others on this list as it involves a friendship between a Great Dane and a human. Scooby Doo was my favorite cartoon as a child, quite possibly because I too am extremely fond of doggos. But the relationship between Scooby and Shaggy is brilliantly captured in the animated series, as they seem to always understand each other, get each other in trouble and have each other’s backs, always.

5. Chandler and Joey

Chandler and Joey

‘Friends’ has been a cultural phenomenon throughout the world, and even though we love all of the characters, Chandler ‘Muriel’ Bing and Joey Tribbiani hold a special place in our hearts. While all the 6 friends have forged close bonds with each other, Joey and Chandler exemplify what friendship truly stands for. They have such an intimate friendship that Chandler and Monica have reserved a room in their own house specifically for Joey.

6. Tintin and Captain Haddock

Tintin and Captain Haddock

This is a duo which all of us have grown up with. Tintin and Captain Haddock’s friendship is not your conventional friendship, Tintin is a teen sleuth while the Captain is a drunken, motormouth. But their friendship has lasted through all ups and downs while reminding us that age does not matter in the forging of proximate ties.

7. Jai and Veeru

Jai and Veeru

Bollywood is not far behind in portraying silver-screen friendships, and the most famed friendship in Bollywood is between Sholay’s protagonists, Jai and Veeru. From their rounds of thievery to their reform by Thakur, Jai-Veeru’s relationship epitomizes Bollywood friendship. And ‘Yeh Dosti’ is the national anthem of ‘bro-hood’ across generations.

Much like these fictional pairs, there is a real-life duo which is equally popular, namely, Quaker Oats and Milk. The combination of Oats which gives you the appropriate amount of fibers and carbs, and Milk which gives you calcium, makes for a wholesome meal. Ideally, consumed for breakfast, Milk and Oats is a tasty and nutritious meal. Start your day with this healthy meal, and remain refreshed and energized throughout the day.
